Can CNMs First Assist for C-Sections?

Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) who wish to first assist within the limited scope of c-sections and tubal ligations may currently do so as part of their APN scope of practice. CNMs must have appropriate education and experience in order to first assist. However, the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) includes a two-day continuing education course in first assisting for CNMs in conjunction with many of their national conferences. The Board of Nurse Examiners acknowledges that CNMs who complete this course, and meet ACNM standards for including new procedures in their practices, may first assist for c-sections and tubal ligations.
